Really solid episode. Emotion and character in the right places. Well paced. I like Sahjhan.

I love this episode! Several fridge logic issues, chief being why the hell Vail cast the spell on Connor a few months’ back if he needs him to kill Sahjahn, but nothing unforgivable. The Orlon window is a classic bit of phlebotinum that I LOVE – straight out of Ikea, that bad boy. That Wes brings such pathos to its destruction is just delicious. And the tortured exposition from Vail about how its destruction will bring back the memories of those from whom they’ve been removed if they are ‘in range’, is worth it for the drama around ‘did Connor get his memories back or not?’. Its obviously telegraphed really heavily that he did, but in such a way that Angel and Connor get to do a macho stiff upper lip, Brief Encounter, Casablanca thing. Ridiculous, but moving. I’ve never enjoyed Connor more.

For some reason, on first viewing I’d got the impression that the reason Connor didn’t act like he just got his memories back is because actually he never lost them – that he was pretending all along since the spell. Clearly I was smoking too much pot when this originally aired! This time, I think I gathered that Illyria didn’t regain Fred’s old memories. It will be interesting to see if this means that for everybody else, their capacity to have these memories restored is now lost for ever or whether another ‘nightlight’ gets annihilated, as I honestly can’t remember.

I loved Illyria and Wesley’s conversations about whether somebody is more than the sum of their recollections, and whether changed recollections mean a ‘different’ person (as in distinct from, or just not identical to). Illyria was great in this episode in general, although I wanted her to out Connor as Angel’s relative after all the fuss they made about her scientific and sensory prowess. She can smell frustration and sense lust through body temperature, so it would have been cool if she could have somehow smelled the paternal DNA or something like that.

Other fun stuff included Gunn ‘Come on Sparky, let’s go; this heart ain’t gonna cut itself out’, lllyria wanting Spike as her pet, Angel fighting the Kaaaaaar’thaaaaaaan demons and of course Sahjahn is always a laugh.
