I thought this was another great episode. I loved the cinematography, which continues to remind me of 70s paranoia movies like Body Snatchers. And while Fred irritated me in Season Three, she’s now one of my favorite characters. This episode really showed off her mix of resourcefulness, intelligence, and vulnerability in a situation that called back to her isolation in Pylea.

I also thought the short moments of humor were very effective to break up how operative and sad the general mood was. Angel and Connor singing “Oh Jasmine,” was the high point, and the Magic Bullet guy was great, but I even enjoyed Danny Woodburn’s turn as the hand eating demon with the small bladder and Angel’s pratfall. (Right before the pratfall, I was thinking “of course he can get away from that mob and sneak to the window unseen – he’s Batman!”, so the fall was a complete surprise.)

There’s an interesting philosophical question about whether the Powers That Be could intervene more directly without compromising free will, and the episode starts by raising that question directly, but the rising hints that Jasmine is eating people resolves any moral ambiguity, I think.

Jasmine calls Connor ” My Sweet Boy,” which suggests that Evil!Cordy is the same entity that we now know as Jasmine. I wonder if the current loving exterior is completely fake or if it somehow coexists with the fairly nasty personality that EvilCordy showed behind closed doors. Maybe we’ll find out.
