Back when the season started, I said that Season 4 has some of the highest highs and lowest lows of any season of Buffy or Angel. On the “highest highs” list, let me add (1) Faith breaking out of prison last episode; (2) the Faith-Angelus fight in Release; and (3) Wesley.

F-ing Wesley, man. He’s every bit the asshole he always was, but his badasserry and self hatred have made him into a really compelling character. Compare him to the Wesley from Angel Season One or Buffy, and it’s really amazing character growth. You can see that he’s still the same character, but he’s changed in ways we never could have believed back then.

It’s kind of chilling that he’s become what I think the Watcher’s counsel probably intended Watchers to be – a cold man who sends girls to their death for the greater good, and gets the most use out of them that they can on the way. Wesley absolutely wants to do good, but he doesn’t believe he can be good while doing it, and that makes him maybe scarier that Hoodie Angel from Season Two.

If more of the Watchers on Buffy had been like Wesley instead of just being moralizing doofuses, the Council would have been a lot scarier.

What’s not to love about Faith in Release? She just suits this show so much. I like that she got beat up by the Beast but just tried to blow that off like she’s fine. The way she was completely shocked by Wes torturing the girl for info showed how much she’d changed. The Faith-Angelus showdown was pretty great. Bit Matrix-y but it was a decent fight. Angelus faking out with shooting her with the shotgun then letting the bullets go as that’s not the way he wanted to kill her felt very in character for him. I also loved Wes in this episode and just how far he’s come as a character since he first met Faith. Grilling her over not letting Angelus kill him for the greater good and turning into a torturer himself were some great moments. But that’s about it for the good in this episode. Seriously what was up with the ‘master’ speaking to Angelus in that goofy voice? Felt sorry for Angelus for having to put up with that crap. C’mon Cordy, you’re new to evil but you can do better than that!
